A Nurse Is More

In searching for a way to say Thank you to all of our outstanding Westways nurses, I came across this poem, which I think says it all very well. May you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday season. Thank you. – Donna Couturié, Director of Clinical Operations

Nurse’s Poem: A Nurse Is More – Written by Richard G. Shuster

A Nurse Is More, Why?

Though nobody can say why for sure,

Nurse’s desire for service is pure.

Not for themselves, it has to be for others.

A life dedicated to their sisters and brothers.

A Nurse Is More, How?

Through reserves of strength, care, and love,

Nurses take their lead from the power above.

Above and beyond, their duty comes first.

Their patient’s needs paramount, before even hunger and thirst.

A Nurse Is More, When?

When we need them the most, at our times of ill,

Nurses come through, with their care and goodwill.

When we feel we can’t go on, and wish to give up the ghost,

That’s when our Nurses give it their most.

A Nurse Is More, Where?

In the hospital, the battlefield, the clinic, and hospice,

Nurses are there, in the ER, the OR, the workplace, and medical office.

Where we are to go for our care, thankfully we find Nurses there.

Aging, sick, fearful, weary, we turn to Nurses and know they care.

A Nurse Is More,

A Nurse Is More, much more than all we’ve said, or all we can say,

Other than to acknowledge the Nurses who brighten our day.

In gratitude, we thank Nurses, their willingness to serve, we find so

Appealing, bringing to us, their comfort, wisdom, compassion and healing.

Something to be Thankful for

It only takes two words to say Thank You, it takes only one word to say Please. Lately I have seen articles about registered nurses voting to authorize their leaders to call a strike unless contract negotiations move forward. They have been in negotiations for more than one year. Representatives for the nurses say they are pursuing better working conditions and wage increases to align their salaries with those of nurses at other hospitals. All this in hopes that the unions can reinvigorate contract negotiations with hospital management.

Someone once told me Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into but hard to get out of. In this case, deterioration of the labor markets encourages staff nurses to work more hours. Nurses who typically work for contract services now work directly for hospitals, thus reducing the hospital industry’s reliance on the kind of outsourced labor we provide. We have seen hiring by hospitals decline. Wage increases for nurses have flattened out, probably becoming negative in real terms. Historically, this has been consistent with how the hospitals operate in these conditions. The hospitals feel comfortable taking advantage of the current environment and feel they don’t need to make the concessions. They should be talking to the nurses who have worked those double shifts and taken on more patients and responsibilities than they ever have because they couldn’t convince them of the changes that need to be made. But, the habit of hospitals is taking nurse contributions for granted, or ignoring them completely. This habit will create a very dynamic demand for nursing services. And the cycle will start all over again.

I would personally like to let you know we are thankful for all our employees. We truly appreciate the energy, enthusiasm, resourcefulness, and skills with which you have shown during your employment with us. So please take advantage of what we offer by planning your own schedules, working days you want instead of being dictated to, work a variety of shifts, and take more control of your employment.

Let’s be thankful we do have options and can take immediate action for the treatment of job dissatisfaction all the time remembering, regardless of the setting, no one can deny that health care is dependent on the presence of clinically competent nurses. – Harold Sterling, CEO
